Welcome!

Mountain Song Studio is a digital project recording studio located along the historic Snickersville Turnpike, in the shadow of the Blue Ridge and the heart of northwestern Virginia's pastoral Hunt Country near Middleburg. While some studios are built to sonic perfection, the ensuing dark windowless environment doesn't always inspire the best creativity. Mountain Song is designed for your comfort as well as your best working environment. Here the sun and moon stream through windows on two sides, the studio is comfortable with or without shoes, and the coffee is always excellent.

So is the sound! Our philosophy is to record the best performance with the best sound, so that mixing your project can focus on enhancing and creatively bringing out your best art rather than spending lots of time compensating for less-than-optimal tracks. And if that means you need to come for a few days at a time, you will be comfortable staying right here and save a lot of time in travel.

Mountain Song Studio

Middleburg, Virginia

Mountain Song is the home studio of singer/songwriter, owner and engineer Andrew McKnight. In addition to many other projects, many of the tracks on Andrew's most recent CDs Turning Pages and Where This River Runs were recorded here. Andrew is available to produce as well as engineer your project.

Our most recent projects were Grounded from singer/songwriter Doug Brouder and the Incredible Occasionals and the eponymous CD from pagan folk/rock band Revel Moon. Visit their websites to hear some of their (and our!) work.

Our Services

Our focus is on making and recording excellent acoustic music for independent CD projects and songwriter demos. The studio can accommodate three or four musicians playing together simultaneously, and build on basic tracks with virtually unlimited overdub capacity. Some of the best musicians in the Washington DC and Shenandoah Valley areas have been here recording tracks with our clients.

We also can do transfers from tape to CD or MP3, digital editing and production from your original recordings, live on-site recording, demo recording and production, and start-to-finish commercial jingles.

Our Equipment

At the heart of the facility is the Roland VS 1824 Workstation, a digital 18-track hard-disc recorder with virtually unlimited recording capacity so we never have to trash a take. The machine offers tape-free recording and instant track access, digital editing, automated mixdown, and enormous flexibility to bring your project to life. In addition to the control/mixdown room, the studio features a cozy isolation booth as well as a warm hardwood floor room. Our gear includes a Focusrite preamp channel strip specifically for vocals; microphones from Neumann, Shure, Sennheiser and Audio-Technica; and Lexicon and Alesis outboard multi-effects to create just the right sonic landscape for your project.

In addition to our own array of microphones and outboard gear, we have partnerships with other local studios to share microphones and studio gear as needed for special projects. We have a drum machine that comes in handy for laying a click track with feel instead of a plain metronome.
